Take action

In 6 months time how on earth do you expect your life to be different if you aren't doing anything about it right now? ~Here's a newsflash, if you aren't taking action today, tomorrow or the next day to work towards your goals then guess what? You and your life will be exactly the same in 6 months time as it is now!

Monday, December 29, 2008

Success rarely comes from making just a few big efforts. Success almost always is the result of small efforts multiplied again and again.
Small, simple acts can reliably lead to big, magnificent achievements. It's just a matter of putting enough of those small, simple actions together in the same direction.
Right now, in this moment, is your opportunity to take one small step toward whatever goal you have set for yourself. In the next moment, there will be another such opportunity, and another and another as time goes on.
Achievement belongs to those who make wise and productive use of time as it comes. Achievement comes from those who understand that small opportunities can lead to big results.
Those small opportunities are everywhere, and you don't have to beg or plead with anyone to give you access to them. You simply have to see the potential they represent, and then take action.
Each time you see the opportunity to take one small step, by all means take it. And soon you'll be racing far ahead.

Christmas Brings the Peace of God by Rick Warren

You will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

*** *** *** ***

Once you make peace with God, that’s spiritual peace, then you get the peace of God in your heart and that’s emotional peace.

This is the one you really need for daily living. The peace of God happens in your heart when you’ve made peace with God. All of a sudden, the stress in your life goes down. You’re not as angry as you used to be. Things don’t bother you as much. You’re a lot more patient. You’re filled with a lot more love and peace.

Why? Because once you have peace with God, you have the peace of God in your heart.

The Bible says, “Don’t worry about anything. Instead pray about everything” (Philippians 4:6 NLT). You have two choices in life: You can pray or panic, worship or worry. Those are your choices. Worry has never solved a single one of your problems. If you prayed as much as you worry, you would have a lot less to worry about! Prayer can change things. That’s why the Bible says, “Don’t worry. Pray!”

“Pray about everything. Tell God what you need. Thank him for all that he’s done. [And if you do this] You will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6 NLT).

Thought for the day'

'To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better.

Christmas: Celebration!by Rick Warren

“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10 (NIV)
*** *** *** ***
This may come as a shock to you, but God really likes parties. God is into parties; God likes to party; God is constantly throwing parties. In fact, the Bible says that God’s angels throw a party every time a single person trusts Jesus as the Lord and Savior of his or her life. They party for joy whenever someone turns away from self-centeredness and turns toward Jesus.
Christmas is a party; it’s a birthday party for Jesus. It’s why we say “Merry Christmas.” Yet, we often leave the guest of honor out of our Christmas parties! Thinking about this irony, I started asking people, “What are you celebrating this Christmas?” This is what a few of them told me:
· “What am I celebrating? Not a lot.”
· “The blessings that we’ve had in our family this year.”
· “Just the Christmas spirit.”
· “Being home and not being on the road for the holidays.”
· “This Christmas? I’m celebrating the birth of Christ.”
· “Nothing. I just want to get through it.”
This last comment is true for a lot of people. Christmas may be a season of celebration, but they feel they have nothing to celebrate. Perhaps that’s true of you, too. You’re thinking, “I just want to get through Christmas. I just want to survive it. I’ve got nothing to celebrate.”
But God, through his angel, tells us that embedded in Christmas is good news of such great joy that, if we believe it, we won’t be able to contain the celebration within us.
But we get so frustrated in our circumstances or so busy simply getting ready for the celebration that we lose sight of the joy. The good news turns into the fact that your in-laws aren’t coming this year or you managed to keep within the Christmas budget.
God’s good news is so much more than that! The joy of Christmas is based on three things: (1) God loves us; (2) God is with us; (3) God is for us. Can you hear the celebration in that?!

Quick Total Body Workout

Hey guys,

December is a busy time... but don't quit working out. If you can't get to class, try this workout at home. It can be done in around 20 minutes and gets your whole body. Do it one to three times a week (on non-consecutive days) and you won't go backwards during the Christmas season. (As long as you don't eat TOO much!)

Releasing Your Regrets by Rick Warren

People who cover over their sins will not prosper. But if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy. Proverbs 28:13 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
How often do you play the “if only” game?
· If only I had it to do over.
· If only I had listened sooner.
· If only I could erase the past.
· If only I could forgive myself.
Because no one is perfect, we all have regrets. We’ve all made bad choices, said foolish things, wasted time, and hurt ourselves and others.
How do you release those regrets?
Here are some strategies that don’t work:
1. We bury them. Burying the past doesn’t work. Like creatures from a horror movie, unresolved regrets come back to haunt us over and over. Minimizing (“It wasn’t a big deal”), rationalizing (“Everyone does it”), and compromising (lowering your standards) are ways we try to bury our regrets.
2. We blame others. This tactic is as old as Adam and Eve. When Adam sinned, he took it like a man – he blamed his wife! We use blame to balance out our guilt.
3. We beat ourselves. We try to pay for our guilt unconsciously through illness, depression, setting ourselves up for failure, and other forms of self-punishment. The problem with beating up on yourself is this: your conscience never knows when to stop! Many spend their entire lives in self-condemnation.
What does God want me to do with my regrets?
· Admit my guilt. Own up to it.Don’t make excuses. The Bible says, “People who cover over their sins will not prosper. But if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy” (Proverbs 28:13 NLT).
· Accept Christ’s forgiveness. He’s waiting to clean your slate.Ask him to clear your conscience, and then remember “there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 NLT).
· Forgive yourself and focus on the future. “Do not remember the past events, pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:18-19 HCSB).

Love Is a Choice by Rick Warren

… That you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Deuteronomy 30:20 (NIV)
*** *** *** ***
Love is a choice and a commitment. You choose to love or you choose not to love.
Today we’ve bought into this myth that love is uncontrollable, that it’s something that just happens to us; it’s not something we control. In fact, even the language we use implies the uncontrollability of love. We say, “I fell in love,” as if love is some kind of a ditch. It’s like I’m walking along one day and bam! – I fell in love. I couldn’t help myself.
But I have to tell you the truth – that’s not love. Love doesn’t just happen to you. Love is a choice and it represents a commitment.
There’s no doubt about it, attraction is uncontrollable and arousal is uncontrollable. But attraction and arousal are not love. They can lead to love, but they are not love. Love is a choice.
You must choose to love God; he won’t force you to love him (Deuteronomy 30:20). You can thumb your nose at God and go a totally different way. You can destroy your life if you choose to do that. God still won’t force you to love him. Because he knows love can’t be forced.
And this same principle is true about your relationships: you can choose to love others, but God won’t force you to love anyone.

Choices

Choices Control Your Calendarby Rick Warren
We are each responsible for our own conduct. Galatians 6:5 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
Your choices control your calendar and, as a result, your lifestyle. Your choices are far more powerful than your circumstances. You may not like how complicated your life has become yet, with very few exceptions, no one is forcing you to keep your life complicated.
You have the power to simplify your life.
The Bible teaches, “We are each responsible for our own conduct” (Galatians 6:5 NLT). To me, that means God expects us to assume responsibility for our lives and to carefully choose how we spend our time.
That’s why I’ve spent years teaching people to discover why God placed them on this planet: What is your purpose for being here?
Ultimately, it will be the donation of your life that will count far more than the duration.
In other words, it’s not how long you live – or even how much you cram into how long you live – it’s really about how you live.
Here are three essential steps to simplify your life:
· First, figure out your purpose, and then let your purpose guide the goals of your life.
· Second, organize your activities based upon your purpose.
· Finally, harmonize your schedule with your purpose; that is, bring your activities into agreement with your goals.
You have just enough time to do God's will while you’re here on earth. You’ve been given just enough time to fulfill your purpose. When you try to do more than God planned for you, it’s only natural that you’ll find yourself constantly out of time or stressed over your schedule.
If it doesn’t fit the purpose of your life, God doesn’t want you doing it. In fact, he may be overjoyed that you finally got the message and stopped doing meaningless activities. He may even want you to add “rest” or “have fun” to your to-do list.
My prayer for you is that you will find relief from stress and a new sense of satisfaction as you do only the things God created you to do.

Thankful Heart

Cultivating a Thankful Heartby Steve Arterburn
Be joyful always. Pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 The great English writer G. K. Chesterton once wrote, "You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing, and grace before I dip the pen in the ink." Wow! What a reminder! There's no doubt in my mind that I could give thanks more often. We set aside meal time, Sunday mornings, and my favorite holiday; Thanksgiving. But, don't let an hour go by without giving thanks . . . for your work, school, kids, health, your spouse, your blessings and your challenges. When you have a God-awareness about life and when you see and sense Him in your day (in the big things and the little things), it's hard not to be thankful."Feeling gratitude and

Hello again,

Completely ignore the previous post. The child that went to school sick is feeling better and is going to stay. So Friday's lunch class is back on AT CHURCH.

And after further thought... lets do the SATURDAY circuit workout at the CCHS stadium instead of the church! Woohoo!

See ya in a bit

Friday & Saturday classes

I am sorry to do this on such short notice but I am cancelling the lunch class today. My daughter is sick and I am picking her up from school and staying with her and Megan is unable to fill in. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Today is back & bicep day. If you want to go ahead with the workout we were going to do a bent over row, superman, pullover, hammer curls & 21's with 5 different cardio stations (jumping jacks, running, shuffle tap, etc.) Do each one for a minute. If you have any questions let me know.

Saturday we will meet at the church at 7:30 AM for a circuit workout for the 5k training.

5k

Hey guys,

So we are training for a 5k... here's one in Knoxville on Dec 13. We should be ready by then... you are not required to run the whole way (or even at all.) Anybody in?

http://knoxjbr.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=279062&lis=1&kntae279062=9ECDE4A91E2A44D9A773BD16E0257D17

THIS SATURDAY!

For those of you training for the 5k... This is the place you want to look every week to find out what we are doing on Saturday. This week we are meeting at 8:00 AM at the State Park. (over by the paddle boats.) The program we are following calls for this workout to be something other than running. So we are going to hike.

Now lets crunch some numbers...

Everyone likes to walk and it is good for you... if you are my size and weight, you burn 119 calories walking briskly for 30 min. Now lets compare with some of the stuff we are doing in class right now... 30 minutes each.

Circuit training- 251
Run/walk intervals 189
Martial arts-315
Hiking-189

So if you were the same size as me and came to all the classes this week you would burn... 1886 calories this week. If you walked briskly everyday for 30 minutes you would burn 833. It's a big difference. To lose a pound this week, I just have to drop my calories 230 a day lower than usual. Sweet!

I got this info by subscribing to Self.com and joining selfdietclub.com (it's a great tool.) There is also a free site http://www.selfcheckup.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi where you can put in your info and get some very interesting numbers.

Lose the Excuses!

What’s Your Excuse?by Rick Warren
The lazy person is full of excuses, saying, “If I go outside, I might meet a lion in the street and be killed!” Proverbs 22:13 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
It’s rare to find people today who are willing to take complete responsibility for their actions. In the victimization that’s present in our culture, our problems are always someone else’s fault.
You can blame whoever you want – the government, your parents, the school you went to, television, your boss, or the rest of society. There’s no need for you to feel bad; anywhere you look there are people to blame.
Sometimes our excuses are quite humorous. Consider these actual statements given to insurance companies by people involved in car accidents:
· “In my attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole!”
· “Coming home, I drove into the wrong driveway and hit a tree I don’t have.”
· “The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.”
· “I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed over the embankment.”
· “I was on the way to the doctor’s office with rear-end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing me to having an accident.”
· “I had been driving my car for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.”
· “The telephone poll was approaching fast. I attempted to swerve out of its path when it struck my front end.”
· “The pedestrian had no idea which direction to go, so I ran over him!”
Silly? Yes. But so are some of the excuses we offer, instead of taking responsibility for our mistakes, failures, and sins.
The Bible says, “The lazy person is full of excuses” (Proverbs 22:13 NLT). Ben Franklin once observed, “The person who is good at excuse-making is seldom good at anything else.”

Do It NOW

Do It Now!by Rick Warren
If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
Most of us have experienced the 8 Phases of Procrastination:
Phase 1: Hopeful – “I’ll start early this time.”
Phase 2: A little tension – “I’ve got to start soon.”
Phase 3: Creeping guilt – “I should have started sooner.”
Phase 4: False reassurance – “There is still time to do it.”
Phase 5: Getting desperate – “What’s wrong with me?”
Phase 6: Intense pain – “I can’t wait any longer!”
Phase 7: Get it over with – “Just get it done!”
Phase 8: Cycle repeats – “Next time, I’ll start earlier.”
Procrastination does tremendous damage to ourselves and others at work. It causes unnecessary pressure and problems … and it wastes opportunities, time, and money.
The problem is: procrastination is addicting! The more you succumb to it, the harder it is to change. It becomes a way of life, causing you a lot of misery.
The Bible says, “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done” (Ecclesiastes 11:4 NLT).
· Stop making excuses!
· Realize perfectionism paralyzes performance!
· Face your fears!
· Focus on the gain, not the pain!
· DO IT NOW!
What have you been putting off that you know you need to do? … something at work … at home … at church? DO IT NOW!
Prayer: “God, help me to DO what I already know I need to do. Help me to do it NOW!”

New Schedule

Hello everyone,

Well, I asked for feedback and I got it in record numbers...3 votes. ;-) And it was basically one vote for each option. So here's what I am going to do.

LUNCH CLASSES

Mon-Chest & triceps
Tues-train for 5k
Wed-Legs & abs
Thurs-train for 5k
Fri-Back & biceps

SAT MORNINGS
Train for 5k - times and locations will alternate, check here each week

EVENING CLASSES

Mon-Full body strength training
Tues-Martial arts

For those of you worried about training for a 5k... I PROMISE we are going to go slow. I have a bad knee and get shin splints myself. So we will take our time and start out doing a lot of walking with short intervals of running and build up to running 30 mins solid. (Maybe longer on Saturdays) But no matter your fitness level, you can do this. If you have knee, hip, ankle or any other problem that would keep you from doing this, it won't hurt my feelings if you skip the 5k days and come on strength training days. (Or you can come and do some other kind of cardio those days.) But the main thing is, I want everyone to be safe.

Let me know what you think about the new schedule!

Prayer Request from Shire

My best friends husband is recovering from surgery he had on Sept. 30th. He is not doing so well and he and his wife need lifting up in prayer. He is at Vanderbilt and has not been able to come home since surgery. She has been traveling back and forth since the 30th. Please pray for healing. They need it desperately. Mike and Margie Hicks are their names. Also, please continue to pray for Jimmy and his family.
Thanks Shire

B) A schedule that is more cardio than strength training. (EX, Mon-walk/run intervals, Tues- upper body weights, Wed-cardio intervals, Thurs-lower body weights, Fri-game day (basketball, tag, kickball, dodgeball, etc) C) A schedule that is more strength training than cardio. (EX, Mon-Chest & Triceps weights, Tues-walk/run intervals, Wed-Legs, Abs weights, Thurs-cardio of some kind, Fri-Back & Biceps)

Ok so let me know! Also if you have a prayer request and have not been to class in awhile, put it here, or email me at lift.your.spirit@live.com and I will post it for you.

Plus, I have ordered a few LIFT tee-shirts I am not sure what they will cost yet, (they haven't given me an exact quote) but last
time we talked it was around $15 a shirt. Let me know if you are interested. They will be white, with the LIFT logo in front and on
the back LIFT..your body, LIFT... your self-esteem, LIFT... your spirits, LIFT each other up in prayer (and then contact info)

How to Develop Self-Disciplineby Rick Warren
God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)
*** *** *** ***
God wants you to develop a self-discipline that pushes you to do things, even as others are giving up.
Over the years, I’ve observed six key expressions of self-discipline:
People with self-discipline master their moods. They live by their commitments, not their emotions. People who do the right thing even when they don’t feel like it accomplish most of what gets done in the world! “A man without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls” (Proverbs 25:28 LB).
People with self-discipline watch their words. They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths. “He who guards his lips guards his life” (Proverbs 13:3 NIV).
People with self-discipline restrain their reactions. How much can you take before you lose your cool? “If you are sensible, you will control your temper. When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it” (Proverbs 19:11 GNT).
People with self-discipline stick to their schedule. If you don’t determine how you will spend your time you can be sure that others will decide for you! “Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility … Make the best use of your time” (Ephesians 5:15–16 PH).
People with self-discipline manage their money. They learn to live on less than what they make and they invest the difference. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go rather than wondering where it went! “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets” (Proverbs 21:20 LB).
People with self-discipline maintain their health. That way they can accomplish more and enjoy their achievements. “Every one of you should learn to control his body, keeping it pure and treating it with respect” (1 Thessalonians 4:4 PH).
The disciplines you establish today will determine your success tomorrow. But it takes more than just willpower for lasting self-discipline. It takes a power greater than yourself: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT/NCV).
The more I accept God’s control over my life, the more self-control he gives me!

I LOVE RICK WARREN... this one is awesome

Changing Your Behaviorby Rick Warren
Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Proverbs 4:23 (GNT)

One of the great psychological discoveries of the past century is that your thoughts control your actions. If you want to change the way you act, you must first change how you think.
Actually, thousands of years ago, Solomon pointed this out when he wrote, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” (Proverbs 4:23 GNT).
The Bible says our thoughts influence six areas of our lives:
· My interpretation influences my situation. It’s not what happens to me that matters as much as how I choose to see it. The way I react will determine whether the circumstance makes me better or bitter. I can view everything as an obstacle or an opportunity for growth – a stumbling block or a stepping stone. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4 NIV).
· My impressions influence my depressions. In other words, my mind affects my mood; my thinking determines my feelings. If I’m feeling depressed, it’s because I’m choosing to think depressing thoughts – about my work, family, or anything else. While you cannot always control a feeling, you can choose what you think about, which will control how you feel.“Hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught . . .”(Psalm 55:2 NIV).
· My beliefs influence my behavior. We always act according to our beliefs, even when those ideas are false. For instance, as a child, if you believed a shadow in your bedroom at night was a monster, your body reacted in fear (adrenaline and jitters) even though it wasn’t true. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you are operating on true information! Your convictions about yourself, about life, and about God influence your conduct.“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31 NIV).
· My self-talk influences my self-esteem. You are constantly talking to yourself unconsciously. When you walk into a room full of strangers, what do you tend to think about yourself? To develop more confidence you’re going to have to stop running yourself down! “Ashe thinks in his heart, so is he”(Proverbs 23:7 NKJV).
· My attitude influences my ability. Winners expect to win. Your perception controls your performance. Mohammed Ali only lost two fights in his career. Before both of them, he said something that he hadn’t said before other fights: “If I should lose this fight […].”“All things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23 NKJV).
· My imagination influences my aspirations. In other words, your dreams determine your destiny. To accomplish anything, you must first have a mission, a goal, a hope, a vision. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV).

How to Handle Conflict

How to Handle Conflictby Rick Warren
My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
I’ll tell you how to deal with conflict quickly, but you’re not going to like it. The solution to conflict resolution is one word: confrontation.
If you’re going to resolve conflict, you must confront. But, you don’t have to confront in anger. In fact, you should try not to confront in anger. Lovingly go to the person and, then speaking the truth in love, deal with the problem immediately.
Very few of us enjoy confrontation. The only people who really do are troublemakers who seem to delight in confrontation. They love to go to people and say, “You’re blowing it!” That’s their thrill.
Because it’s risky and uncomfortable, most people don’t like confrontation, but it’s the only way to resolve conflict.
What’s the best way to confront? James 1:19 teaches three rules for confrontation. Everyone should be:
· Quick to listen,
· Slow to speak, and
· Slow to become angry.
If you’re quick to listen and if you’re slow to speak, you’ll automatically be slow to anger.
What are you listening for? You are listening for the hurt in that person. Hurting people always hurt other people. When someone is being a jerk, more than likely it’s because that person is hurting. When you understand their hurt a bit, you have a better understanding of why they do what they do, and you’re a little more patient with them.
Understanding always brings patience. When we don’t understand things, we’re impatient. When we understand them, we’re much more patient.

Devotion for the day

How to Determine What Matters Mostby Rick Warren
There are three things that will endure – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NLT)
*** *** *** ***
The most important lesson God wants you to learn on earth is how to love. Here are three simple truths about love:
1. Life without love is really worthless. We often act as if relationships are something to be squeezed into our schedule. We talk about finding time for our children or making time for people in our lives. That gives the impression that relationships are just a part of our lives along with many other tasks. But God says relationships are what life is all about.
Jesus summarized what matters most to God in two statements: love God and love people. He said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. . . . This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40 NLT).
The point of life is learning to love God and people. Life minus love equals zero.
2. Love will last forever. Another reason God tells us to make love our top priority is that it is eternal: “These three things continue forever: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13 NCV).
Love leaves a legacy. Mother Teresa said, “It’s not what you do, but how much love you put into it that matters.” Love is the secret of a lasting heritage. In our final moments, we all realize that relationships are what life is all about. Wisdom is learning that truth sooner rather than later.
3. We will be evaluated on our love. One way God measures spiritual maturity is by the quality of your relationships. In heaven God won’t say, “Tell me about your career, your bank account, and your hobbies.” Instead he will review how you treated other people, particularly those in need.
Jesus said the way to love him is to love his family and care for their practical needs: “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40 NRSV).
People need to understand that when you transfer into eternity, you will leave everything else behind. All you’re taking with you is your character. That’s why the Bible says, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love” (Galatians 5:6 NIV).
Knowing this, I encourage you to pray this simple prayer every morning: “God, whether I get anything else done today, I want to make sure that I spend time loving you and loving other people – because that’s what life is all about. I don’t want to waste this day.”
